Gothic birds. Weird rarities. Beautiful lines.

I’m a hobby breeder based in San Antonio, Texas, working with a small number of distinctive, rare birds selected for appearance, sound structure, and consistent breeding lines. This project helps offset graduate school expenses and student loans, so these birds aren’t inexpensive—but they are genuinely rare, carefully raised, and bred with intention. I don’t operate at hatchery scale, and I don’t require minimum quantities; you’re welcome to purchase a single bird rather than being forced into bulk orders. At this time, all birds are available for local pickup in the San Antonio area only.

Birds I raise

These are my current projects. Availability varies by season.

Ayam Cemani (“Gothic chicken”)

A fully black breed with an iconic look. I’m working with a rare Indonesian bloodline often showing a more primitive wild appearance, with less down as chicks and deeper black pigmentation than those from older bloodlines established through Europe. The birds display fibromelanism (extreme hyperpigmentation) throughout the body, including skin and meat, while laying normally colored eggs. My breeding program emphasizes consistency of type, sound structure, and long-term health. I’m happy to discuss the provenance of my stock with anyone who’s interested.

Japanese Zombie (“Ghost Samuria”)

A very rare, experimental project bird with a distinctive appearance. This line began unexpectedly after a raccoon attack wiped out my Onagadori hens and my only Ayam Cemani putah rooster. Putah Cemani are an uncommon genetic variant of Ayam Cemani in which a recessive gene suppresses the breed’s usual black pigmentation, producing birds with white feathers, skin, and even meat—despite retaining underlying Cemani genetics associated with fibromelanism. With limited options, I paired my remaining hens with my Japanese Onagadori rooster, Ronin. The result was a unique cross between two exceptionally rare birds. Just look at the pictures!!! What began as necessity has become an ongoing project focused on consistency and type.

Le Flèche & other "top secret" projects

I also work with additional rare/heritage birds (like Le Flèche and Japanese Onagadori). If you’re looking for something specific, ask.

About

San Antonio Designer Chickens is my hobby breeding project. It is a small-scale breeding project, not a hatchery. I keep my numbers manageable so I can actually watch how birds develop over time and make decisions based on what I see, not on production targets.

If you’re new to rare or experimental birds, that’s fine—I’m happy to answer questions and be upfront about what I have and what I don’t.
